Passenger
list of the "British Queen" 1790
The British Queen's passengers were part of the migration of Scots Catholics
from Clanranald's Estates, and departed Scotland from Arisaig one month
later than the "Lucy" and "Jane".
James P. Lawson, in the "'Lucy','Jane', and the Bishop" states,
"'The British Queen' passengers sailed a month after the 'Lucy' and
'Jane' emmigrants, the former sailing to Quebec City. From there they
are said to have travelled to the Montreal area, but it was apparently
another full year before they settled in their permanent home near Johnstown
(Cornwall), in Upper Canada, where they apparently had relatives amongst
the established population.", and then, "Most, but not all of
the passengers on "The British Queen" were from different parts
of the Clanranald estates than the "Lucy" and "Jane"
emigrants, but there is some overlap."
Kristen notes the following: "This list follows much the same pattern
as the preceeding two (Jane and Lucy), but is more systematic about occupation,
and includes a column labelled "amount", which clearly records
the passage money paid by the several families. Certain key amounts recurr,
but not all adults appear to have paid the same, some paying L3 17s, another
L2 1s, and several L1 18s 6d. In any event, although these were extremely
low rates by contemporary standards, they again indicate that it took
capitol to emigrate. The original list is in the Public Archives of Canada."
